Missions

Missions of MOMIJI

1. Chibany space trip

Photographs a subject mounted on the outside of the satellite to nurture children’s scientific curiosity
A filter of Chiba Tech’s mascot “Chibany” is placed on the outer face of the satellite, and images of Chibany with Earth in the background are taken Photos of Chibany as if on a trip in space are published to raise interest in space development

2. Pollen dispersal forecast

Photographs snow patterns (remaining snow) in the Tohoku region and forecasts the spring pollen count of the year from the downlinked images The Pollen-CAM has a resolution of about 224 m/px from 400 km altitude Video capture is also supported

3. Earth imaging for desertification in Greece

To follow vegetation change caused by desertification, photographs the mountains around Athens, where wildfires occur, using the city as a landmark A capture mode that estimates attitude from 6 photodiodes, a geomagnetic sensor and a gyro is used to improve pointing accuracy

4. Multi-sensor Earth observation

Observes the Earth environment with 3 kinds of sensors Each sensor is controlled by an MCU developed by the members from Bhutan

Sensor Observation
IR camera Takes infrared images of Earth to demonstrate imaging of vegetation and forests
UV sensor (UV-A / UV-B / UV-C) Measures UV intensity to observe the ozone layer
Geomagnetic sensor Measures the Earth’s magnetic field

Demonstrates that captured images, so far downlinked only to the Chiba Tech ground station, can also be received by ground stations abroad

6. In-orbit demonstration of CIGS

Carries 2 kinds of CIGS (copper indium gallium selenium sulfide thin-film) solar cells developed by Idemitsu Kosan and demonstrates them in orbit

Mission Description
Power supply Supplies power generated in orbit and downlinks current, voltage and temperature as HK data
I-V curve Measures I-V characteristics to check for performance variation and degradation in space. Compares right after deployment with just before re-entry

7. APRS

Survey of the Reeves’s muntjac population

To study the Reeves’s muntjac spreading on the Boso Peninsula, counts the population with an object-detection camera at an unattended ground station in the field The satellite sends the TLE so the unattended ground station can track the orbit; the detected information is received over APRS and downlinked to Chiba Tech

Services for radio amateurs

Four modes, the previous three plus a Chat Bot mode, to raise interest in radio technology

Mode Operation
Digipeat Re-transmits a message received from a ground station as it is (send Hello and Hello comes back)
User Query A query with a number from 0 to 40, such as 12?, is answered from 40 registered messages
User Message Sends a message uploaded from the Chiba Tech station to radio amateurs
Chat Bot Analyzes any received message on board and replies with a suitable answer chosen from a preset vocabulary

Received messages are stored on board and downlinked over UHF Specifications are on the Comms page

8. Characterization of a new diode

Evaluates the radiation tolerance of Schottky barrier diodes made of next-generation semiconductor materials Compares the I-V characteristics of diodes mounted inside and outside the satellite in orbit to check whether and how much they degrade from radiation

9. In-orbit temperature interpolation

Demonstrates a function that analyzes temperature data acquired in orbit on the ground and fills in data lost to packet loss or falling between sampling periods
